Andrei Slovolitov
is a documentary photographer, living and working in Berlin.
In my practice, I explore everyday life, as well as personal and social transformations, using the language of documentary photography.
My path began with street photography and the role of an observer. Over time, influenced by the online program at the Rodchenko School of Photography and Multimedia (2021) and the one-year program at Fotografika Academy (2022), I shifted toward project-based work. I started to view photography as a tool for personal expression, a way to articulate my own position. The themes I work with arise from my observations, emotions, and reflections, as well as from an ongoing dialogue with photographers whose work is close to me. These themes become the starting point for documentary projects in which photography serves as a way to express an inner response to what is happening.
Photography became my medium after nearly twenty years in the corporate sphere. Initially, I chose it as an accessible, mobile, and technically simple tool. Today, it is a fully developed language through which I build projects and use photography as a way to understand reality.
I work with photography, personal and found archives, and appropriated imagery. At this stage, the photobook format is the most compelling form of project representation for me. My portfolio includes one completed photobook project — Morekhodka.
After relocating from Saint Petersburg to Germany in 2022, I founded DocuLab, a documentary photography school for the Russian-speaking community in Berlin. In December 2024, I curated a group exhibition of students’ works titled Displacements. My curatorial role included selecting and supporting projects, structuring the process, and organizing the final exhibition. This experience allowed me to maintain a steady connection with artistic practice, regardless of whether I was actively working on my own projects.
